What is Certified Bison?

Certified Bison was founded by the Bison Council with one goal: creating a premium product. It was developed by establishing rigorous standards in the areas of Animal Distinction, Ranch and Animal Welfare, and Processing.

WHY CERTIFIED BISON?
Chefs and consumers have noted a quality difference in the bison they serve and eat. Certified Bison was created to take the variability out of bison production and set the highest standards for quality. All finished Bison products carrying the Certified Bison stamp is ensured of having met these uncompromising standards.

In addition, Certified Bison was created to provide purchasers and consumers a measurement of quality, or GRADE, from which to select. In other words, not all bison is Certified Bison. And, until now, there has not been this point of differentiation in the bison industry.

WHO IS BEHIND CERTIFIED BISON?

The Bison Council, together with leading experts, invested substantial time into the research that became the foundation for Certified Bison. This research resulted in the formation of Three Pillars that comprise Certified Bison:

Bison is different than the water buffalo. The Certified Bison stamp ensures the products are only North American Bison meat.
RANCH AND ANIMAL WELFARE STANDARDS
Bison quality begins on the ranch. All Certified Bison ranches must maintain regenerative agriculture practices with pasture-raised animals, grain finished and handlers meet strict, nationally-recognized animal welfare standards.

Processing and safety measures are the crux of our research and the basis for Certified Bison. What differentiates Certified Bison from other bison lies in strict processing standards.
